The 50th Gospel Music Association (GMA) Dove Awards brought out the best of Gospel and Christian Music artists Tuesday, October 15 to the live television recording. The event, which aired live via audio on satellite radio’s SiriusXM’s The Message Channel, took place at Lipscomb University’s Allen Arena in Nashville, TN. The televised broadcast will air Sunday, October 20th at 8p.m. CT on the Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN).
Artists, producers, songwriters, videographers, representatives from ministries, media, tech creatives and others came together to honor some of the genre’s best music presented by some of its finest talent of the past year with 2019 Dove Awards. The diverse group of participants and attendees came dressed in attire that went from glammed to the max, to cool, and laid-back skinny jeans.
I’ve been coming to the Dove Awards and participating on panels or in workshops since the 1990s. It was such a heart warming sight to see artists and industry people at the Dove Awards from a rainbow of cultures that represented the tapestry of colors that is this country, along with faith based music representing that “coat of many colors” at the Doves. For that, I applaud Jackie Patillo, President/Executive Director of the Gospel Music Association and her team. They have transformed the GMA and made it more inclusive than it has ever been.
There was warmth and love in the atmosphere as 42 Dove Awards were presented throughout the evening. Plus, there was a mix of new artists and veterans from Gospel, Contemporary Christian and Blue Grass to Traditional Gospel, Contemporary Gospel, Hip Hop, Worship Music, and a few others in between.
Tune in and you will see a wide array of performances by a diverse group of artists representing the many styles within Gospel/Christian music, including Kirk Franklin, Jekalyn Carr, Kelontae Gavin, Jonathan McReynolds, CeCe Winans, Lecrae, Riley Clemmons, Bill Gaither, Casting Crowns, Shirley Caesar and Dorinda Clark Cole, Gawvi, Aaron Cole, Amy Grant, Danny Gokey, Tedashi, Steven Curtis Chapman, Matthew West, Michael W. Smith, Toby Mac and more.
Among the nights winners on the Gospel side was Kirk Franklin, Tasha Cobbs Leonard, Donald
Lawrence and The Tri-City Singers. You’ll have to check out the 2019 Dove Awards on Sunday, October 20th to get the rest.
A real treat for those of us veterans who have been working in the gospel industry for over 20 years was to see flashbacks from past Dove Awards performances dispersed throughout the show.
Presenters and those making appearances include: Tasha Cobbs Leonard, Koryn Hawthorne, Dr. Bobby Jones, Donald Lawrence, Tauren Wells, William McDowell, and Kathy Lee Gifford and Nicole C. Mullen.
