   According to CNN, Avery died December 31, 2013 in Los Angles due to complications resulting from open heart surgery. Avery played Wil Smith's character's straight-forward, Uncle Phil in the NBC sitcom Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

   Although James Avery played many other roles on TV and in film, the dignity, stand-up guy and straight forward attitude he brought to his Uncle Phil role on the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air has perhaps endeared him to the hearts of millions.  He will be missed.  My prayers and condolences go out to his family and loved ones.
