The 2018 BET Awards show was held June 24 in Los Angeles at the Microsoft Theater. The stars shined bright in their best and always interesting attire, but fashion aside, the night’s big winner was Kendrick Lamar who walked away with awards for Album of The Year and Best Male Hip Hop Artist.
Since, I’m all about gospel music, of course I am going to talk about the night’s gospel performances. One that may have been a pleasant surprise to many was Snoop Dogg performing “Blessing Me Again,” a song from his chart topping gospel album Snoop Dogg Presents Bible of Love,” dressed in a preacher’s robe. Snoop was also joined on stage by gospel star Tye Tribbett to perform another gospel tune, “You.” Now all of this followed Snoop getting the crowd on its feet as he did a medley of his greatest hip-hop hits. But it was all-good by the crowd’s positive reaction to get your hip-hop thing on and then praise the Lord!
Another positive note about the BET Awards 2018 was the emotional performance of the song “Stay Woke” by Meek Mill and Miguel. Utilizing skits with scenes or urban violence, its message attacked racism and our jail system.
My all out favorite was the musical tribute to Anita Baker. The tribute was introduced by Tyler Perry, it featured the night’s host Jamie Foxx adding a bit of comedy and music to the segment, plus singers Marsha Ambrosius, Ledisi and one of my favorite singers, inspirational songstress/actress Yolanda Adams. Adams received a standing ovation for her performance of the Anita Baker classic “You Bring Me Joy.”
Back to gospel, the Dr. Bobby Jones Best Gospel/Inspirational Award went to
Lecrae feat. Tori Kelly for the song “I’ll Find You.” Although this isn’t gospel, but one of my favorite hip hop videos won an award for Video of the Year, “God’s Plan” by Drake.
